Vintage Suitcases

Vintage suitcases have always caught my eye, especially the buttery toffy colored ones that are oh so stylish.  We are fortunate to come across them on occasion at estate sales and each time we purchase one I can't help wonder of the wonderful places the suitcase has traveled.  Suitcases today are simply practical, they get you to your destination with the least amount of hassle, it is doubtful that years from now we will even think to use them as decor items in our homes.  But the vintage suitcase is another story, check out these photos, maybe they will inspire you to infuse your home with a bit of vintage style.

Simply done...

Highly stylish...

Down right amazing...

We hope you are enjoying this holiday season.  Have a wonderful day!

Great Example of Recycled Style

Recycled Style offers an opportunity to create a very unique look inside your home.  But sometimes it can be hard to envision exactly how to use it in conjunction with everything else you already have in place.  What we have found, in using Recycled Style in our homes and seeing it in others, is that the pieces that we find and sell typically work best at providing that one-off WOW factor that get people talking.  For some the industrial look and whimsical decor is something that works throughout their entire home.  But it also looks great when mixed in with more traditional or modern decor.

Last week we were fortunate enough to get some great photographs from Stephen Scharbrough showing how he incorporates Recycled Style in his home.  Stephen lives here in Indy and has his own music business, repairing/tuning pianos and performing locally.  He has a fantastic eye for incorporating a variety of recycled items and furniture pieces into his home.  It creates a very unique look and a home that, we think, really shows off the personality of the people living there.  Here are just a few of the photos he sent to us...

We love this office space.  The architectural pieces add a pop to the room.
The desk lamp is really cool and there are lots of other little items on and
around the desk that make this room standout.

Suitcase nightstand...

Not your average coffee table

Love the stacked end tables, suitcases and vintage movie camera...

We never tire of seeing letters in someone's home decor...
So there you have it.  Hopefully these pictures give you some new ideas on how to use Recycled Style in your home.  And thanks again, Stephen, for sending your pictures to us!!!

Calvin and Hobbes

Today we got our first substantial snow of the winter season.  It's this time of year, more than any other, that we are reminded of our favorite iconic comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes.  Bill Watterson first published the comic in November of 1985 and brought it to an end nearly a decade later.  During that time he created two of the most memorable cartoon characters of all-time.  His combination of intelligent adult humor spoken through a child and an imaginary stuffed animal creates something that will never be duplicated.  Of the various themes that were prominent throughout the adventures of Calvin and Hobbes, none might be quite as memorable as Calvin's snow people.  We started looking through these today and found ourselves laughing hysterically.  Hope they provide you some laughs as well and for those of you who also got snow today, happy snow day!!

Batman, a Bomb, and Great Decor

During a fortunate channel surfing experience this weekend the powers of Syd & Harper came across another dynamic duo, Batman and Robin.  To say we found the following clip HILARIOUS would be an understatement.  But after we regained our composure and watched it for the third time, we also found ourselves admiring some of the decor in the upstairs pad above the saloon.  Check it out during the beginning of the video and then laugh hysterically as Adam West tries to to rid himself of a bomb... it's more difficult than one may think.

Anthropologie's Buyer, Keith Johnson

As many people have found out through his television show, Man Shops Globe, Keith Johnson is the buyer for Anthropologie.  In this video you get a little insight into his thought process when purchasing items for the various Anthropologie stores across the country.  His idea of buying things that he would buy for his own home is something that we've been doing since we started Syd & Harper.  Everything that we sell we would just assume keep for ourselves if nobody else finds a use for it.  We believe that following this buying principle creates a unique collection that, at the same time, works well together as a whole.  It's a creative process and an art form that is getting more recognition everyday and we love being part of it :)  Enjoy the video!

Inspiration

What is Industrial Style....

Clean...

Sturdy...

Old School...

Unique...

These are just a few images that inspire us and define what industrial style is.  These items will last forever and give your home a look that isn't like your average run of the mill decor.   We are a bit quirky, we like to have fun and we definitely don't take ourselves too seriously.  Industrial style definitely fits our personality, how about you??

A Syd & Harper "Short"

The season for potential Oscar candidate films is upon us.  The final two months of year always provide a plethora of films with stories and performances worthy of an Oscar nod.  As former screenwriters, we decided to get in on the mix.  Here's to hoping that this "short" film will finally lead us to Tinseltown glory...

Antiquing in Maine

Ok, you know you love your job when you enjoy doing it when you are on vacation.  I am currently on vacation in Maine (that's me in the kickers relaxing in a hammock) and enjoying the beautiful Fall colors, however I am also enjoying the many antique shops in the area:)  I rented a home in my favorite spot in the states, Ogunquit, Maine.  This time of year the summer crowds are gone and the streets are essentially open for me to roam pretty freely unlike the lines I would experience in the Summer.  Rte. 1 from Ogunquit to Arundel was spattered with antique shops and to my wonderful surprise a daily flea market.  So, of course I had to go out and check it out!!

Unfortunately the Harper side of Syd and Harper was not along for the trip so I had to go it alone:(  Dusty, aka, Harper kept up with the business back in Indiana and I thank him very much.  The least I could do was go and buy and blog about it, right??  (I'm feeling a bit guilty, can you tell?)

So below are some pics of my antiquing adventure...

I am limited on space for my goods so had to limit my purchases to this lot of goods.  The signs are super cool, I have a feeling only one will make it to the shop, I may be keeping one for myself:)

I'm loving these metal display racks that I scored at a random flea market!!  And the other finds..

a cool stage light and...(drum roll please)

a fun drum!!

This week has been quite fun and relaxing here in Maine and I will miss it very much.  Thank you Bobby for the wonderful house!!  I won't forget it:)

And to the Ocean...

you will always have my heart:)

Thanks Dusty for all of your work this week!!!!  See you soon:)

Our Fall Booth

The month of October has been somewhat of a transition as we change our booth space up for the fall and winter months.  After a couple of weeks of bringing in various new items and changing things around, we finally have everything in place.  We are very excited about this collection of items as it is a strong indication of where we want to go with our merchandise during our second year.  One of our biggest directional changes is that of carrying bigger and more substantial pieces.  We hope that you can now not only splash in a bit of Syd & Harper into your home, but also build an entire room around some of our more prominent pieces.  One such piece is our freshly finished industrial locker table...

When we found this piece it was in pretty rough shape.  We completely refinished the wood top and did some careful cleaning on the lockers.  In the end, we are very happy with the way that it turned out and love this very unique table.

You'll find many other new items in the pictures below.  Let us know what you think about everything and anything.  We'll be posting again soon as we near our first birthday on November 1!!!
