Album Carts

For today's inspiration we feature woodworker, Dusty Rael Wheeler, an artist named after a 1974 Genesis album.  His pictures of album crates caught our attention and we wanted to share his amazing work with you. Check out more of his designs on his Rael Wood blog.

Pretty cool, right? We couldn't think of a better way to house our favorite albums from the past.  Please share with us your favorite album of all time.  For album inspiration check out our very own, Dusty Howe's blog at Six String University where he periodically features an album of the day.  His most recent selection was the following:

Friday Night at the Movies

Friday has always signified the release of new films coming to the big screen. However, the real life independent film genre that saw brief success during the 90's seems to becoming increasingly more difficult to find. These are the films that we especially love, and they are what inspired us to try and write a screenplay almost five years ago. Unfortunately, fewer of these movies are being made, and even less get a wide release on the big screen.

We realize this genre isn't for everyone. Typically a great independent art film has a rating between 6.0 and 7.5 on IMDB. We actually looked up tons of our favorites and nearly all of them fell into that range. Consider it the barometer when looking for great films in this genre. Anyway, here are some examples that we love.

Kicking and Screaming is a wonderful film by Noah Baumbach and stars some of the greats in the independent film genre including Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton and Eric Stoltz. It's about a handful of college students who, upon graduating, do nothing and talk about it wittily.

The Anniversary Party also has an amazing cast as seen in this trailer and was written/directed by the great duo of Alan Cumming and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Broken English is one of the more recent of this genre that we were able to see in the theatre. It was written/directed by Zoe Cassavetes, the daughter of the great John Cassavetes. This movie yet again features the queen of independent film, Parker Posey.

Unfortunately, Happythankyoumoreplease did not make it to a national release. But we recently saw the writing/directing debut of Josh Radnor (best known as Ted in How I Met Your Mother) and this is one that shouldn't be missed.

So those are some independent films to recycle back into the world if you haven't already seen them. As for a new movie to go see this evening... Well, the one movie being released this week that looks of interest, Magic Trip, the journey of Ken Kesey, is not being shown in Indianapolis. But luckily, there is another trip that you can view on the big screen and we are really looking forward to checking this one out. Here is the trailer, and enjoy your weekend, everyone!! :)

Inspirational space

We love creative spaces and we love even more when we are able to provide just the right piece to make a space come alive.  We admire those of you who dare to push the limits of design, who find beauty in a rusted piece of junk and can turn an empty shell of a camper into a retreat..

If Julie inspires you like she does us then you will want to check out the full story provided by Re-nest.

Have fun creating!!

Inspirational space

Courtesy of Coast Magazine the following picture provided us with today's inspiration.  The picture tells the story of how photographer, Michele Turriani bought a decommissioned light vessel and turned it into his home.  Turriani is clearly a man with a vision and his use of industrial style is amazing, for the full story check out allaboutyou.com you will be amazed.

Fitz and the Tantrums

A wonderful thing happened as I was driving to my vacation getaway last week, I actually turned on the radio and heard a song that made me stop and listen.  It is very rare for me to listen to the radio but I got a  bit nostalgic as I was heading south in the direction of my college town of Indiana University.  I turned the dial to 92.3 Bloominton and was immediately transported back to my college days:)  This group is called Fitz and the Tantrums, the song is "Moneygrabber".  The song, although new, sounds familiar with a Motown feel yet fresh all the same, I can't stop listening to it.  As soon as I was back to civilization and able to connect to a computer I downloaded their music and was not disappointed by one song on their cd.  They are a cool group, if you have time check them out on Live at Daryl's House.   At the very least check out this song, it will be a nice tune to take you into the weekend!

Have a fabulous weekend!

The Getaway

As mentioned in our last post, we disappeared for a few weeks and took some much needed time off after our last flea market.  We had been working hard preparing for our last event while at the same time working our full time jobs, Dusty a guitar teacher for Six String University and I as a Human Resource manager.  We were quite frankly exhausted, and needed to slow down and chill.  During this month we were able to accomplish a few personal goals.  Dusty wrote a short screenplay, which is awesome and is currently looking to collaborate with an animator, please call if you have such talents:)  I, however, didn't accomplish such impressive endeavors. Instead, I ran off to the woods and hugged a tree.  Ahhhhhhhhh... silence, to finally hear nothing was, amazing.  I know I will surprise a few of you by the fact that I went alone and I have to admit, my first night in a remote house in the woods I too was surprised I was able to get past the fear of Freddy Krueger knocking at my door.   In the end I conquered my fears, cooked myself some amazing meals, listened to some great music and soaked in a jacuzzi under the stars.  Below are just a few photos that I thought I would share.

This amazing house is called "Robyn's Nest"

Charcoal flame equals yummy eats:)

This should be our Syd and Harper mobile

Perfect compliment to my fantastic burger

It's amazing how getting away from it all allows one to gain perspective, think clearly and dream.  The time away was productive and we are now ready to continue our journey.  Thanks for checking in!

We are back!!!!

Ok, we are back! We never actually went away, we just took a much needed month off to relax, have some fun and rejuvenate. In the month of June we made a decision to move out of our space at the antique mall and take our items out on the road to meet all of you. Our first show at Perk Up Cafe in Broad Ripple was very fun and successful. We were fortunate to meet up and collaborate with another business that is in the process of opening currently referred to as the "Corner Store" at the intersection of 75th and Westfield Blvd. in Broad Ripple. This past weekend we came out of hibernation and had a flea market at the store. Below are a few of the pictures taken from the event...

We love our new Brownie Cameras and bowling pin:)

The antique typewriter is a perfect decor piece...

Anyone need a lightbulb?

The "Corner Store" at 75th an Westfield Blvd... Like them on Facebook :)

Thanks to everyone who stopped by this weekend, it was so great seeing everyone again and meeting new friends!!

Outdoor Furniture for the Summer

You can expect to see a nice selection of outdoor furniture and decor at the flea market. This set of table and chairs has the perfect amount of rust and wear to add some character to your outdoor living space. If you are interested, you will also be able to see this piece at the Carmel Farmer's Market beginning May 21. We will be providing some atmosphere for our friends Jeanette and Alice who will be selling their delicious German artisan breads and pastries at the market. Expect to see more information about them on our blog in the near future, but for now you can get more information at their website, www.perkupindy.com.

New Letters!

The ever popular letters will make their grand return at our Flea Market this June. These are without a doubt the biggest, most industrial letters that we have ever found. We've been playing some Scrabble with the 11 letters that we have and our favorite word isn't actually a word at all. But who doesn't recognize this iconic abbreviation right away?

Incase you are wondering how you might be able to use these gigantic letters in your home, here a few ideas that we found for you...

Pretty cool, right???

Thank You Carmel Antique Mall

With Monday's announcement of our new flea markets at Perk Up this summer, we also want to inform you that these new events will be replacing our space at the Carmel Old Town Antique Mall. Our time there has been a great experience and we want to thank all the of the staff for their help over the past ten months.

The decision to move out is a positive one as this is just one in a series of steps in moving towards getting our own place. Carmel Antique Mall allowed us to test our products and find our voice as a brand. We feel that we have found that voice and now are taking the steps to bring you more Recycled Style in new and exciting ways.

You can still visit our space through the month of May. Thanks to all of the wonderful customers we have met during our time there and we look forward to seeing you all at our first flea market in Broad Ripple! :)

Announcing the Syd & Harper Flea Market!!

We are extremely excited to announce our first flea market of the summer to take place June 4th and 5th at Perk Up Cafe in Broad Ripple! This market event will showcase our largest collection of unique decor to date. In addition, we have the great privilege of partnering up with the wonderful team at Perk Up who will be offering their delicious coffee, pastries and German artisan breads during the flea market. We are thrilled with this new partnership as this will be the first of a series of flea markets to be held throughout the summer and fall months.

Our goal over the next several months is to bring our Recycled Style to you in an environment that combines our passion for food, music and fun. The Broad Ripple Village is not only the home of Perk Up Cafe but also the home of many art galleries, sidewalk cafes and quaint shops which are all accessible via the Monon Trail. We can't think of a better place to hang, so mark your calendar for June 4th and 5th, grab your friends and head to our flea market in Broad Ripple. We promise to start your day off right :)

Be sure to visit our blog and facebook page daily as we will be posting more specific information about the flea market and showcase many of the items that will be available for sale. We hope that all of you can join us in kicking off this new chapter for Syd & Harper!

Refinished Desk

For some time now we have been researching refinishing techniques for battered old furniture that needed a facelift before being put back into the world. We wanted to create something that would be both high quality while maintaining some of the original beauty of the piece. After some work, we think we have achieved both of these goals. This desk is our first large refinishing project that we are unveiling. Please let us know what you think. We are still working on other techniques and different looking finishes. But we are happy with this one and look forward to finding it a new home!!

Taxidermy Design

In our constant searching through a variety of design magazines, we are noticing more and more unique taxidermy pieces. The photo above has some more traditional examples. The photo below is a bit more unique. The sisters pictured in the photo have recently been featured in both the NY Times and Elle Decor UK. We LOVE the swans. Not too mention we thought it was cool that they shared our vision with the fencing mask right below them :)

Of course, there are some examples of taxidermy that go beyond rational explanation. Our little friend below would be one of those examples. And while he didn't make it in a high end newspaper or fashion magazine, well, we still think he is awesome!!

Unique Storage

We love unique storage units like this one! These unique little files can be used to decorate your home and add some character or for more practical uses such as a place for the cars keys that you can never find in the morning. Let Recycled Style help organize your life :)

Our Favorite Colors

We wanted to post this because the color scheme used on this very unique living room love seat really highlights what inspires the pallet for Syd & Harper. The mix of teal and turquoise with shades of grey look great great together. We also love the wood chair in front that warms up the room. All we would add is a pop of red somewhere :)  Have a great week everyone!!

Creative Kitchens

Kitchens are one of the most naturally creative places in your home. It's where the art of preparing a meal and entertaining friends happens. Your kitchen is a perfect place to infuse a bit more of your personality into your home. One of the easiest ways to do this is with unique bar stools and dining chairs. Look for seating that is going to stand out against the rest of your decor. It will add a punch to your kitchen and be a great conversation piece during your next gathering!

Dining Nook

Continuing with some more pictures from Rue online magazine, here is a cozy dining nook. We love the use of the industrial cart to display the flowers. The big letter 'V' and classic coffee shop chairs aren't too shabby either!

Trading Logos

Hi everyone!!

In an effort to help promote the creative ventures of others and spread the word about our own business, we are introducing a little idea called Trading Logos. The idea behind this is very simple. We want to post your logo on the sidebar of blog with a link to your website. All we ask in return is that you do the same thing for us. It's that simple!

For all who want to participate, please email us (sydandharper@me.com) an image of your logo along with your website address. It will be up and going on our website as soon as possible. We will respond to your email with our logo and that's all there is to it. We want to hear from as many people as possible from a wide variety of creative fields. Hopefully we will all benefit from this small effort and get a chance to meet more people who are interested in what we are doing.

Thank you in advance to everyone who decides to participate. We really appreciate it!! :)
